Sophie Pokorny is a photographer from Los Angeles, California, currently residing in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2019. Although she does commercial work for hire, her art primarily focuses on documentary subjects including issues of identity, family, and race. In her own practice she continues to use medium and large format film in order to focus on the process of making images in a world where digital photographs can be produced in the palm of our hands.

Using the name given to her by Jiangmen Social Welfare Institute, an orphanage in China, Sophie Pokorny examines documents pertaining to her adoption in 1998 in relation to her identity as an adoptee, an Asian-American, and as a child in a multi-racial family. In order to show a complete picture, personal essays are paired with scanned documents, family photos, and contemporary images in order to show how Sophie Pokorny has come to think about her identity.
