Adrienne L. Glover
Chicago, Illinois
My work explores themes of privacy, storytelling and the things left unsaid that wrest themselves into object memory, shown through wordplay and poetry, dialogue, mixed media collage and a variety of other media. Much of my work is rooted in explorations of revolution from a Black Feminist Theory standpoint, inspired by love and also taking heed to honoring and allowing a collection of emotions to move forward the process. As an astrologer, there is a part of my work that acknowledges this practice through the integration of symbology during the creative process.
The power of transformation is explored and hinted at within the second iteration of the series The Black Box Sessions. This series, titled Black Box Sessions vol. 2: TRANSFORM includes a limited-edition series of 4 digital prints. There is a possibility of including future work as part of this series, likely to be multimedia/poetry/digital in experience. Should the curator wish to explore further discussions on this series, the artist is happy to continue to inform them of the series development.
The belief that rage cannot be feminine is a current theme within the body of my work, as are recognitions of the various ways that collective trauma and music can coincide with one another as a means of reframing and redeeming’s ones sense of self within the realms of not being “too loud.” Or telling too much of one’s own truth so as to become a target for weaponized violence against women in its modern form: doxxing, slut-shaming, berating others for telling their truths, hidden communications. Recent events over the past decade have echoed the 60s while still transforming ideas around gender, about sexuality and the workplace, about equity, diversity and change. Recent developments regarding the intersectionality of gender, race, sexuality and violence have been made their way into the public as news broke around various violations of trust, power, and masculine assumptions around privilege, complicity, safety and rejuvenation.
DoDecahedron 2021- v. 1 is a collaboration series done with Artist on the Lam founder Jenny Lam and Adrienne L. Glover.
Adrienne is creating 12 lists of 12, for each artist to complete. These questions will include some input from Jenny Lam and there will be an analysis of the work submitted via survey/other forms will serve as a framework for future explorations of the idea of a 12-sided object. The power of the number 12 is a further point of exploration for several of the themes, as well as an exercise where one of the 12 lists will be the creation of a series of 12 poems which meet certain parameters. A digital version of the top 3 visual products will be displayed on a website and there is a possibility of having a few podcast shows and virtual events as part of the project.
Why DoDecahedron?
The artist has known Jenny Lam for twelve years. Fast friends, the two met at a local alumni club event in Chicago.
The inspiration is a celebration of 10 years of Artist on the Lam and 12 years of friendship, artwork, poetry and metallic shoes and more.
