Alba Margarita

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

My artwork can be best described as “luminous darkness.” Through my work, I convey inner visions and channeled messages that cannot be expressed with words, as well as exorcise anger, resentments, anxieties, and even celebrations about personal breakthroughs, joys, and transcendent and liminal experiences. Painting on black surfaces conveys a sense of coaxing out the beauty and depth from out of the hidden, shadowy side of my psyche. I am deeply inspired by female surrealists like Remedios Varo, Lenonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, and others: I feel that womanhood is and always has been a deeply surreal experience, rife with uncertainty, danger, witchcraft, sensuality, love, intuition, carnage, and a sense of repressed Goddesshood.
