Oh hi! My name is English and I’m a visual artist who draws, paints, prints, illustrates, and incorporates mixed media wherever I can. My work is heavily influenced by my fascination with communication, the human body, and an itch to explore my surroundings. Line and process play a huge role in the artwork that I create. Through thickness, lightness, fluidity, the material used to draw that line, etc. — all of that creates a visual language in one simple movement. There is a beauty in that simplicity, which balances out my need to work with a process. To me, process is almost like a ritual, important and sacred. I truly enjoy going through specific steps to create a final form, like in printmaking. Each step you take to create the print is important and contributes to the final piece. When drawing or painting, I get to create my process. Much of the time this involves layering materials, taking away materials, and layering some more. My most recent series of work focuses on hand gestures and how these gestures can be interpreted as conjuring magic or energies as reactions to emotions, such as anxiety.

English Marie is a visual artist. She grew up in Michigan and moved to Chicago in 2007. In 2011, she graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, focusing on Studio Art and Art History. English moved to Salt Lake City in 2015, where she became a member of Gutherie Artist Studios in 2018. Over the last 10 years English has had opportunities to show locally and nationally, while also working as a full-time in-house graphic designer.
