Irena Ocepek

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Irena is an illustrator based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She transforms imaginative concepts into captivating visuals through her curious illustrations. Her work seamlessly blends whimsy with substance, often using vibrant colours and expressive linework to create narratives that resonate. At heart, she’s a storyteller exploring the nuances of imagination and emotion.

Inspired by the poetry of Slovenian Istrian bard, poet, and priest Alojz Kocjančič, these artworks offer a visual interpretation of the Šavrinka — historical and cultural symbol of Istrian women. These women traveled long distances across Istria, collecting eggs and carrying them north to sell in the port town Trieste. More than just a livelihood, this trade defined their identity. -Šavrinka- became a symbol of courage, resilience, and hard work, demonstrating determination and adaptability in the face of economic hardship. Illustrations also draw on Istrian legends and fables surrounding the creation of the region's rivers and landscape, further exploring its rich cultural heritage.

Irena’s work spans art and visual communications, including drawing, illustration, comics, and design. This versatility reflects her curiosity for visual storytelling and her interdisciplinary approach.
