Marie Magnetic (b. 1989) was born in Jackson, MI, and resides in Chicago. She is inspired by her identity as a Jewish, Indigenous (Blackfeet Nation), neurodivergent (ADHD), and queer woman as she examines dystopia, delight, and delusion in society. Growing up in a small town in southwestern Michigan helped to shape Marie’s values as she witnessed friends and family experience addiction, mental health issues, poverty, and other forms of systemic disadvantage.
Marie’s artwork reflects the experiences of being othered. In her work, Marie critiques the mundane, the morose, and the magnificently mad. Additionally, she is influenced by dada and surrealist art, working to create a sense of investigation for the viewer. Art is experimental for Marie—she uses painting, collage, and mixed media to delve into a world where familiarity and the unknown merge.
Marie has exhibited in group shows at the Chicago Fine Art Salon, Woman Made Gallery, Fulton Street Collective, and a solo exhibit at Little Broken Things Hair Salon. Her art and poetry have been published in Headlight Review, Decapitate Magazine, and Handbasket Zine. Marie was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Central Michigan University. Recently, she received an honorable mention from The Grey Cube Gallery and an artist grant from the Haven Foundation. Marie hopes to teach her audience to think about the world differently, challenge societal norms, and inspire a greater social consciousness.
