James Gu, a son of immigrants from mainland China, was born in Toledo, OH, and spent childhood in Carrollton, TX. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2015 and completed the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Post-Baccalaureate Painting & Drawing program in 2020. Currently, James’ work explores themes of rituals, cycles, and addictions.
